FESTIVE cheer will light up Westcliff when Christmas Lights return to its iconic shopping street, Hamlet Court Road.
Following a lengthy fundraising effort by Westcliff community group, Hamlet Court Calling, the road’s 28 streetlights will be decked out in battery-powered Christmas illuminations.
The lights will be installed and switched on November 21 and will stay up until early January, with the group also organising a “Festive Friday” on November 22.
The event hopes to see traders and businesses along Hamlet Court Road join in the fun, and decorate their shopfronts in an “opportunity for the road to celebrate”.
The announcement of the campaign’s success follows a fundraising push, which has seen a total of £1,429 raised so far, through public donations, and a number of larger cash boosts.
One came thanks to a company supplying the lights, as well as from several larger private donations.
Andy Atkinson, Milton Society chair and member of Hamlet Court Calling, reportedly said: “It is really excellent, and we are thrilled to have achieved this, it has involved an awful amount of hard work and it has been technically quite difficulty to achieve this.
“The plan started around early summer when we were beginning talks with the council, as our group got formed properly in the spring, it was one of the first things we were looking at.
“We have ended up with an environmentally friendly solution with battery operated lights, that doesn’t affect the infrastructure of the lampposts.”
Mr Atkinson added: “This is the beginning; we will get more recognition for our road. This can only get bigger from here, the publicity is triggering more donations and they are so welcome.
“We have achieved this project, but we have had to use our own resources and we are open to more.”
