A LOCAL history group will be hosting a talk and film screening relating to the floods of 1953.
The Essex Society for Family History’s South East Branch Meeting will feature a film and talk by Chris Izod at Westcliff’s Baptist Church Hall on Saturday December 2.
The tidal surge devastated Canvey Island and the wider area, resulting in a huge loss of life.
The film, called Flood 53, features testimony, archive footage, film and newspaper reports, of this awful night in January of 1953, which marked one of the worst peacetime disasters to strike the east coast.
The event will begin at 2.30 pm, but the hall opens at 1.30pm for research and friendship.
There will also be an opportunity to purchase a copy of the film or Chris’s book “My Southend Memories.”
The Baptist Church Hall is located at Milton Road, Westcliff, SS0 7JX.
