Former Bank’s Conversion

PLANS have been submitted to convert the building of a former bank in Hadleigh into residential accommodation.
An application has been lodged with Castle Point Council seeking prior approval to change the use of 211 London Road from commercial premises to residential use.
The site was previously occupied by Lloyds Bank before the branch closed in 2022, as part of a wider programme of closures announced across the UK.
The closure of Lloyds meant that Hadleigh was left with no bank at all, following the same pattern as Thundersely and Benfleet.
After the closure, both the upper and lower floors of the building remained empty.
Planning documents state the proposal would see a prominent building brought back into use, with permission for conversion to residential under permitted development rights, with no substantial external alterations planned.
The application states: “The proposed change of use from use class E to class C3 at 211 London Road represents a sustainable appropriate form of development within an established urban location.
“The proposal reuses an existing building efficiently, support housing objectives and occupies a sustainable location with public transport and services.”
The ground floor will remain as an office space option, with two bedrooms created on the upper floor.
Due to this lack of external alteration, the application adds that the proposed residence would sit comfortably within the surrounding area and would not result in harmful aspects such as noise overlooking, loss of privacy, or disturbance.
The document also states that the development is not likely to create unacceptable parking pressures.
Castle Point Council will now consider the application before a decision is made.
