Fortnightly Garden Waste Collection – A WINTER garden waste collection pilot has been approved by Rochford District Council.

A WINTER garden waste collection pilot has been approved by Rochford District Council.
Rochford District Council has agreed to launch a winter pilot scheme that will see garden waste collections move to a fortnightly schedule during the months when residents typically produce less garden waste.
The decision was approved by the Environment Committee on Thursday 1 October.
The Council says its waste collection service is facing increasing demands, with longer journeys to disposal sites, a growing number of homes across the district and rising operational costs placing greater pressure on existing resources.
To help address these challenges, councillors have agreed a pilot that will test whether fortnightly garden waste collections, alongside improvements to collection routes, can help the service operate more efficiently and provide a better value, while continuing to provide a reliable service for residents.
Details of when the pilot will begin will be announced shortly.
A council statement said: “The pilot is intended to help the Council understand how the service could be delivered sustainably in the future. The findings will be used to inform future discussions about waste collection services across the district.
“Residents will also have the opportunity to share their views through a district-wide consultation, which will take place as part of the pilot. Feedback from the consultation, alongside the results of the trial, will be considered by councillors before any decisions are made about the future of the service.”
Coun Tino Callaghan, Chair of the Environment Committee at Rochford District Council said: “Rochford is one of the only councils in Essex that has not introduced a separate charge to collect garden waste, and we want to keep it that way.
“This pilot will help us test what changes to garden waste collections could make the service more efficient and help us respond to the pressures we are facing, while continuing to provide a reliable service for residents.
“I want to reassure people that this is a trial and not a permanent change. We will be carrying out a public consultation and listening carefully to residents’ feedback before any future decisions are made.”
The results of the pilot and the feedback received through the consultation will be reported back to councillors before any consideration is given to making changes to the garden waste collection service permanent.
