MARK Francois, the Conservative Candidate for Rayleigh and Wickford, paid tribute to D-Day Veterans during a recent visit to NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Mr Francois, whose father, Stoker 1st class Reginald Francois, served aboard a minesweeper named HMS Bressay on 6 June 1944, was part of a visit by the House of Commons Defence

Committee (HCDC) to NATO HQ, to talk about the UK’s sole in supporting Ukraine and deterring Vladimir Putin from trying to push into NATO territory.

During a meeting with the Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR), British

Admiral Sir Keith Blount, Mr Francois too part in a discussion regarding D-Day and allied co-

operation and how NATO had helped keep the peace in Western Europe, since after the

Second World War.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Francois said: “As the son of a D-Day Veteran, my father always impressed upon me the importance of never taking living in a free country for granted.

“As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day, in about a week’s time, that remains vitally true, even eight decades on.”
