LEIGH resident and Chelmsford City Sports Ambassador, Lulu Alexandra has returned from the ISU Adult International Figure Skating Championship in Oberstdorf, Germany with her 11th ISU Gold Medal.

After being told in 2022 that she’d never skate again, let alone compete, after a total rupture of the tib post tendon, she endured a gruelling and invasive 5 hour reconstructive surgery to effectively rebuild her foot, transferring tendons, reconstructing ligaments, moving bones and inserting an implant to support the newly constructed foot.

After 2 years of intensive physio and sheer determination, Ms Alexandra fought back to compete once again.

After a disappointing 4th place finish at the Winter World Masters Games in Italy earlier this year, she was determined to fight on for a podium finish in Germany.

Juggling training and often painful physio sessions with working 2 jobs, Ms Alexandra delivered an energetic and entertaining Artistic Free skate in the Gold Women’s category.

“I am so grateful to my surgeon, Mr Bhagava, who is an absolute genius, and to my rehab physio Andrew Livett at Benfleet Physiotherapy who has taught me how to walk, stand and get me back into a pair of skates again.

“There are some things I simply cannot do, so my coach and physio have had to rethink a lot of things and made smart decisions with choreography.

“I can’t run, for example, but I can skate as the boots are so supportive.  I’ve had to relearn a lot of things from scratch. I still can’t balance on one leg in my trainers without falling over, but thankfully my skates help hold me up.”

Ms Alexandra is coached by Victor Teslia at Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre in Chelmsford, and would like to thank the centre for their continued support through their sports ambassador scheme.
