A GROUP of thirteen parents and children from Rayleigh and Leigh have completed the Chelmsford Half Marathon to raise vital funds for Gold Geese, a local charity supporting children and young people fighting cancer in Southend and Basildon.
‘Team Skye’ is named after Skye Harris, the 13-year-old daughter of one of the runners, who last year finished two years of treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
The group, including Skye and her mum Christina and brother Marley, took on the challenge for the third year in a row, to raise money for Gold Geese, who have supported them since her diagnosis in December 2021.
Christina Harris, said: “Gold Geese have been a constant source of support for my family, throughout the last three years, whilst Skye was fighting her own battle with leukaemia.
“They are nothing short of amazing, a shoulder to cry on, a bright light in the darkest moments and always checking in, making sure we were okay and if we needed anything at all.
“They have helped us in countless ways from emotional support, taxis to hospital appointments, delivering presents to Skye while she was poorly in hospital, arranging takeaways, food vouchers, Christmas present vouchers and arranged for Skye to have the most beautiful End of Treatment party.
“They are the most wonderful humans offering an exceptional level of support and I simply don’t know how we would have made it through this journey without them by our side.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who has donated so they can continue their incredible work helping other families.”
Gold Geese provides practical and emotional support to local families of children and young people fighting cancer. Support is tailored to each family’s needs and ranges from funding for mental health therapy and food shop vouchers to toys, weekend trips away and practical help with travel to and from hospital.
Katie Southgate, founder and CEO of Gold Geese, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone on Team Skye for all their support and raising awareness of childhood cancer.
“Around 1,900 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK, and it causes a huge upheaval for everyone in the family – emotionally, physically and often financially. We aim to be there every step of the way for local families fighting childhood cancer.”
