Grandma’s RNLI Walk - A LEIGH fundraiser hopes to raise £300 after her valiant Pier challenge.

A LEIGH fundraiser hopes to raise £300 after her valiant Pier challenge.

Claudine Bridson walked backwards to the end and back of Southend’s iconic Pier in aid of the RNLI.

Ms Bridson, 70, explained: “I’m a member of the RNLI and participate in their annual May Day Mile event.”

Wearing a knitted RNLI Boat hat and accompanied by sea swimming buddies from the group the Wavebravers, who steered her along the planks, Ms Bridson braved the mile and a third length of the iconic attraction, with one friend rattling the RNLI donation bucket for fellow walkers to donate.

She said: “The cashier at the ticket office let us in for free as a gesture and that fee could go into the fund too.

“As we got to the end of the pier we were privileged to be shown into the actual station and into one of their boats for a photo shoot done by Daniel.

“The visit was a surprise on the spot organised by the gentleman running the gift shop, before making my way backwards to the beginning of the pier.

“The total from that walk, and my calf muscles still remember it today, came to £140 I also got £150 of donations from school mums, when I collect the grandsons from school and from neighbours.

“I hope to go to £300 or over, I have a couple of promises waiting, which would be five times my initial pledge.”
