A CARING eight-year-old boy is set to complete a triathlon in honour of his nan.
Louix Hounsell, from Leigh, is taking on a children’s triathlon this month to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease Association, after his nan Shirley Phillips, 66, was diagnosed with the degenerative disorder.
Louix said: “I want to raise money to help find a cure for motor neurone disease because my beautiful Nana has it.
“I love her so much and wish there was a cure. Please donate, we want to support the MND association south Essex branch.”
His mother Anna Hounsell spoke of her pride at her son’s efforts, which will see him complete a 50-metre swim, an 800metre bike ride and then a 600metre run around a track in a sports centre.
She said: “Shirley was diagnosed in 2023, Louix is very close with her and always has been. We have explained what has been happening to him, he asked loads of questions and wants to help her, it is scary for him.”
Motor Neurone Disease Association explains: “With motor neurone disease, known as MND, messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste, which can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.”
Ms Hounsell added: “Louix is nervous about the swimming, but sport is his thing, he is quite sporty and I am very proud of him.
“This is a bit of fun really; I want him to enjoy it, no matter what.”
The youngster has raised nearly £1,500, and is hoping to raise even more before the event on June 22, taking place at Basildon’s Sporting Village
