Great North Runners

A HUSBAND-and-wife team from Leigh are joining forces to run a charity challenge in memory of a much-missed and loved family member.

Zena and Rick Thompson are taking part in this years’ Great North Half Marathon on September 8th, fundraising for Alzheimer’s Society.

Mr Thompson explained: “We are running The Great North Run, in memory of Zena’s late mother, Carol Allchorne.

“Carol was diagnosed four years ago with the condition and sadly passed away in June 2023 at the age of 76.”

The couple hope to raise awareness of the disease, whilst setting a motivating and positive challenge for themselves.

The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the world, and sees participants run between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.

Whilst Mrs Thompson is taking on the run as a fresh challenge, this run will mark Mr Thompson’s 19th time of running.

“I was introduced to running by the late local running legend Mel Batty,” Mr Thompson added.

“We hope to raise money to find a cure to enable funds for the trials, and would really appreciate everyone’s support”

The Alzheimer’s Society gives help to those living with dementia and provides hope for the future, by campaigning to make dementia a priority, by funding ground-breaking research.
