CONSERVATIVE Candidate for Rayleigh and Wickford, Mark Francois, vowed to fight newly revealed plans to build thousands of homes on Green Belt land, between Wickford and Rayleigh, at the recent Wickford General Election hustings.
The event, which followed a format similar to BBC Question Time, included three out of the five candidates for the Rayleigh and Wickford constituency – and was chaired by Mike Davies, the Chairman of the Rayleigh Town Museum – who has overseen similar hustings in the constituency, at previous General Elections.
During the evening, Mr Francois brandished a large A2 map, based on official documents lodged with HM Land Registry, showing that major national developer, Bloor Homes, has secured “options” to develop hundreds of acres at Dollyman’s Farm, in Rawreth (between the two towns of Rayleigh and Wickford), for potentially thousands of homes.
Bloor Homes, were the developer behind the highly controversial construction of 600-plus homes at Ashingdon, which was bitterly opposed by local residents and by Mr Francois as the local MP.
The Ashingdon development also led to the felling of the “Rochford Oak Tree”, to provide access to the site, to the fury of local residents and environmental campaigners.
Speaking about the new plans at Dollyamn’s Farm, Mr Francois said: “I first heard about these proposals some weeks ago and warned the community about them in my
introductory General Election leaflet.
“Subsequent to that, a local planning expert then came to my Campaign HQ, in Rayleigh, and presented me with a detailed map, outlining the proposed development area, which I then unveiled at the Hustings.
“It would be completely inappropriate to build on this scale, in the Green Belt, between Rayleigh and Wickford, which would be a classic case of totally unacceptable urban sprawl.
“I hope the residents of Rayleigh and Wickford Constituency will re-elect me with a clear
mandate to fight these proposals tooth and nail, including in Parliament, as their local MP.”
