A DAY to raise awareness and funds for local guide dogs raised over £900.

Guide Dogs Southend & District Branch held its annual flag day in Southend city’s high street on Saturday, September 23.

The day was supported by visits from the Southend Mayor, Coun Stephen Habermel and his wife Tracy, alongside the MP for Southend West, Ann Firth.

Jon Lovett, of the organisation said: “our guests were welcomed by the fundraising committee and introduced to volunteers and, naturally, some of the magnificent dogs.”

Mr Lovett continued: “The event raised £920 from donations and official merchandise sales, all proceeds from which contribute to the training of puppies and maintaining guide dog partnerships in the area.

“The committee would like to again thank the public for their exceptional generosity helping those with sight loss to lead independent lives.”

The Mayor of Southend commented: “It was a real pleasure for the Mayor and Mayoress of Southend City Council, alongside Anna Firth MP, to join members of Guide Dogs Southend & District Branch Fundraising on Southend High Street for their flag day.

“The branch raises funds through various methods – in collections, donations, events etc –that are used to maintain training and guide dog partnerships in the Southend and District area.”
