LOCAL hospice charity, Havens Hospices, held an inspiring event for the Learning Programme schools and groups taking part in the upcoming Waddle-on-Sea art trail.

The Learning Programme’s baby penguins are an important part of the art trail coming to Southend City this summer. Sponsored by Rickard Luckin, each one will be designed by a local school, youth group or community project, making them completely unique with their own personalities and names.

Over 60 baby penguins will be displayed together in ‘mini huddles’ across the city, alongside 31 large penguins for eight weeks between July and September before they waddle back to their forever home with their creators.

The event gave the local schools and groups the opportunity to hear first-hand from a number of presenters and talk to each other about their ideas for their sculptures and fundraising activities.

Annie Laughrin, Art & Education Manager for Wild in Art and co-creators of Waddle-on-Sea, gave advice and tips on the art materials to use when decorating the babies.

She was followed by Faye Vince from Havens Hospices who shared key information and the reason for the charity’s art trail, and gave the groups ideas on how to turn their penguin into a brrrrrillant fundraiser for local hospice care.

Jan Mansfield, Head of Education & Not-for-Profit at Rickard Luckin, Waddle-on-Sea Learning & Community Programme Partner, said: “We are incredibly proud to support an initiative that aligns with our ethos and values at Rickard Luckin.

“As a firm with extensive experience advising organisations in the education and charity sectors, we understand the vital role they play in our communities.

“Giving back to the area where we live and work is deeply important to us, which is why we’re thrilled to be the Community & Learning Programme Partner for Havens Hospices’ Waddle-on-Sea public art trail.

“This inspiring project will not only spark creativity and motivation in young people, but also raise vital support for the incredible work of Havens Hospices.”

At the end of the session, the groups could collect their blank baby penguin and take them back to begin their decoration before returning them for the trail.

Faye Vince, Learning and Community Programme Lead at Havens Hospices, sais: “It was great to see all the local schools and community coming together for the Inspiration Event.

“This is a big milestone for the trail, everyone was so excited to take home their sculptures and begin the creative process.

“As well as being an unforgettable event for all involved, the art trail will raise thousands of pounds for Havens Hospices, allowing us to provide free, specialist hospice care for local adults, children, and families who need us.”

Havens Hospices includes Fair Havens in Southend, and Little Havens, the children’s hospice for Essex based in Benfleet. The care provided by the charity is completely free of charge, thanks to the generosity of individuals and groups, raising money and making donations.

The Waddle-on-Sea trail is a fun, free and accessible event taking place in the city of Southend, attracting thousands of people of all ages for an ‘ice’ day out.

The large penguins that will be dotted around the city from the middle of July to September, alongside our mini huddles, will be auctioned off to help raise thousands of pounds for the free, specialist hospice care Havens Hospices provides for local adults, children, and their families.

Waddle-on-Sea is made possible thanks to Presenting Partner Ipeco, Official Partners BTMK, Highview, Able Group and Revive Digital, Rickard Luckin as Learning & Community Programme Partner, Atlantic Pacific as Logistics Partner, 6rs as Creative Partner, Main Media as Videography Partner, BBC Essex as Radio Partner and with the valued support of Southend City Council.
