LEIGH’s Poppy Appeal is making a call out for volunteers to help them with their work running the town’s Poppy Appeal.

The post became open after the previous organiser had to stand down for personal reasons.

Community Fundraiser Laura Gibbs explained: “If we don’t find someone to be the Poppy Appeal Organiser, or a team to do it, we won’t have a poppy appeal in the area.

This would be a great shame, as the residents of Leigh usually raise over £40,000 which changes the lives of our armed forces and their family, so I am so grateful for their generosity.”

Ms Gibbs, who is also Poppy Appeal Manager for Essex, explained the role: “It’s a voluntary role and the person, I recommend a team if possible as the area is big, would have 100% support from me, The Poppy Appeal Manager and would have an induction.

“They would be in charge of ordering the poppies, and poppy stock, distributing them to shops, businesses and schools and having a stand in supermarkets, whilst organising a rota to have it covered.

They would have to collect everything back in, counting and banking money.

“We do have a lot of volunteers already who are willing to help and some of Leigh Royal British Legion branch always help too.”

Ms Gibbs added: “We will need someone who is organised and had time to dedicate, as it is quite a busy volunteer role, but anyone who is interested can have a chat with me and cover what they can.

“There is an application form and two references that will need to be completed, I am happy to meet up with anyone who is keen.

“We have people from all different walks of life and ages, you don’t have to be associated to an RBL club or branch.

“We have a team of parents and teachers; we have people who are retired and a team who work full time and spilt the role between them.”

To apply, or to find out more, email Ms Gibbs on: [email protected] or call: 07803 012312.
