‘Hidden Gem’ Accolade

VISITENGLAND has unveiled the winners of its prestigious Visitor Attraction Accolades for 2022-2023, celebrating exceptional visitor experiences across England.

A spokesperson for Rochford District Council said: “We are thrilled to announce that Rayleigh Windmill has been honoured with the esteemed ‘Hidden Gem’ award.”

Rayleigh Windmill, a cherished 214 -year-old Grade II listed landmark, stands as one of Rochford’s most beloved tourist destinations. This iconic structure serves as both a museum and an exhibition space, offering visitors a journey through history while also providing valuable insights into Rayleigh Mount.

VisitEngland, the national tourism agency presented the accolades to a select group of 91 attractions from around the country, acknowledge excellence across various aspects of the visitor experience.

The accolades given are the result of rigorous evaluation conducted through the VisitEngland Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme. Rayleigh Windmill’s outstanding performance in this assessment underlines its commitment to providing visitors with a top-tier experience.

Coun Julie Gooding, Lead Member for Leisure, Tourism & Wellbeing of Rochford District Council’s Joint Administration said: “A huge congratulations and well done to all those who volunteer at Rayleigh Windmill.

“We know the windmill is a hidden gem, so it’s great that this has been recognised by VisitEngland.

“It also shows the hard work and commitment that goes into making this historical landmark such a special place to visit.
