A KEY historic feature of the Rayleigh Windmill has been installed after Rochford District Council invested in restoring the Fly and Fly Frame.

The frame was skilfully crafted and installed by Suffolk Millwright, who are known for their expertise in restoring and maintaining traditional windmills across the UK. Suffolk Millwright has restored this crucial component that traditionally orients the cap of the windmill towards the wind, bringing the windmill to its full glory.

Rayleigh Windmill is a cherished part of our district’s history and a popular venue for weddings and celebrations. It has received the VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction award, showing its appeal to both tourists and locals.

Coun Michael Hoy, Deputy Leader of Rochford District Council and Chair for Economic Development, Regeneration & Tourism Committee, said: “The installation of the restored Fly and Fly Frame by Suffolk Millwright is a milestone in preserving the Rayleigh Windmill’s historical significance.

“We are delighted to see the windmill restored to its former glory and encourage everyone to visit and experience this remarkable piece of our heritage.”

Currently, Rayleigh Windmill is hosting a series of exhibitions where visitors can meet artists and enjoy unique artworks until Sunday 27 October. Entry to these exhibitions is free.

The Rayleigh Windmill, open from April to October, welcomes visitors on Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. The Windmill may be closed for a private event, so please check for planned closure dates before visiting. Entry is free, although a minimum £1 donation per person is encouraged.

This local landmark is operated by a dedicated team of volunteers whose knowledge brings the history of the windmill to life for all who visit. For those interested in volunteering at Rayleigh Windmill, email: [email protected] or call 01702 963328.
