Historic Pub To Close - AN historic Rayleigh pub is set to close.

AN historic Rayleigh pub is set to close.

Pub retailer and brewer Greene King has confirmed that its Dick Turpin pub on the A127, built in 1927, will be closing down for good in July.

The proposed closure of the inter-war road house has come as a bitter disappointment to bikers, and travellers who have made the pub a stop on their journeys for decades, especially as the company confirmed the pub would be being demolished.

A spokesperson for Greene King said: “We can confirm that the Dick Turpin in Wickford will be closing on July 8 2024.

“Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one.

“We are aware that this will be disappointing news to the local community and our loyal customers, and would like to thank those who have enjoyed visiting us over the years. We look forward to welcoming them into our other pubs in the area soon.

“In the meantime, we are working with our team from the Dick Turpin to find alternative roles at our other pubs in the local area where possible.”

Following the announcement, a local councillor has reportedly suggested that the pub could be saved if it became a community-interest pub.

This would require members of the community to band together and raise enough cash to take it over.

The pub was originally built to cater for users of the then-newly constructed Southend Arterial Road.

The pub is named after highwayman Dick Turpin, who was born in Hempstead in Essex.

A mythical character, and appropriate for a roadside pub, he is associated with the early ages of road travel, famous for leaping front of horse-drawn carriages to rob the rich of their goods at gunpoint.
