CAMPAIGNERS are toasting success after a U-turn by a train company saw an historic walking trail re-opened.

Network Rail have finally re-opened Blounts Farm Level Crossing in Hockley after a four-year battle with keen ramblers.

The route was closed in 2019 following safety concerns from the company, but now walkers are again able to enjoy the saffron Trail route that stretches 70 miles from Southend through Hadleigh to Hockley and up to Saffron Walden in Uttlesford.

Campaigners are haling it a success that their tireless work promoting the importance of the popular route has achieved.

Hockley coun Adrian Eaves reported he said: “is extremely good news.

“The thing that always frustrated us is that Network Rail could’ve saved themselves the hassle if they had talked to us and we simply had no idea what was going on.

“There has been a great amount of noise about this and I have been in contact with so many different people, we made it very difficult to keep this closed and it is fantastic people can enjoy this hundred-year-old historic trail.”
