Homelessness Prevention Hub - A new homelessness prevention hub has been unveiled by local charity HARP as it expands efforts to help people before they reach crisis point.
A NEW homelessness prevention hub, believed to be the first of its kind in the city, has been unveiled by local charity HARP as it expands efforts to help people before they reach crisis point.
A new homelessness prevention hub has officially been unveiled in Southend town centre, as local charity HARP expands its efforts to support people before they reach crisis point.
The charity welcomed supporters, partners, community representatives and local stakeholders to its new High Street premises on June 3, offering guided tours of the building and sharing plans for the services that will operate from the site.
The new premises will become home to HARP’s dedicated Homelessness Prevention Hub, which officially opens to the public on Monday 8 June.
From that date, anyone worried about their housing situation or at risk of homelessness will be able to contact the charity on 01702 615000 to request a same-day appointment, subject to availability. The service has been designed to provide timely advice, practical support and guidance before housing difficulties escalate into crisis.
Alongside the Prevention Hub, the building will provide space for creative activities, workshops and community projects aimed at supporting wellbeing, confidence-building and personal development.
The June 3 launch event offered invited guests a first look at the facility ahead of the public opening, giving them an opportunity to explore the building and learn more about the support that will be available going forward.
The event also reflected HARP’s commitment to involving the people it supports. Residents and service users played an active role in welcoming guests, helping to provide catering and refreshments throughout the day. Visitors enjoyed tea, coffee and light refreshments, including a celebration cake baked by one of HARP’s residents, which quickly became a talking point among attendees.
Vanessa Hemmings, Chief Executive of HARP, said: “While today’s event marks the opening of the building, the real milestone comes on Monday when we begin welcoming people through the doors of our Prevention Hub.
“We know that early support can make all the difference, and we want people to know that help is available before they reach crisis point.
“This new hub allows us to strengthen our prevention work while creating a welcoming space where people can access advice, build confidence, learn new skills and connect with others. It is an important investment in both individuals and the wider community.”
The opening comes at a time when homelessness services across the country continue to face increasing demand, with charities and local authorities placing greater emphasis on prevention and early intervention.
HARP believes the new facility will help create more opportunities for people to access support before problems escalate, while also providing a base for activities that promote recovery, wellbeing and social inclusion.
The charity hopes the new hub will become a valuable community resource and an important part of its long-term vision of ensuring that no one in South Essex has to face homelessness alone.
