Homelessness Sector Training

HAVENS Hospices is offering free specialist training to frontline staff in the homelessness sector, equipping them to recognise palliative needs, support bereaved clients and build professional resilience.
Staff working with people experiencing homelessness are regularly exposed to serious illness, bereavement and premature death.
Many of the individuals they support live with complex needs — including terminal illness, substance dependency and mental health conditions — yet access to appropriate end-of-life care for this group remains significantly unequal.
Despite this exposure, frontline workers often have limited access to structured training in palliative care or bereavement support.
Havens Hospices has developed a 12-month programme — Resilience and Compassion — to address this directly. Funded by the Community Investment Fund and free to attend, it is open to key workers, support workers, outreach staff and team managers across the homelessness sector.
The programme includes a one-day workshop covering bereavement, grief, professional resilience and recognising when a client may be approaching the end of life, alongside a practical palliative support toolkit.
It is complemented by quarterly online reflective practice sessions that provide workers with a structured space to process the emotional impact of their work and build peer support. All sessions are designed and led by Havens Hospices’ experienced and qualified wellbeing counsellors, drawing on the charity’s established expertise in palliative and end-of-life care.
Sarah Bunce, Adult Counselling Service Lead at Havens Hospices, says, “People experiencing homelessness are among those least likely to receive appropriate care at the end of their lives.
“The staff who support them are skilled and committed, but too often work without the knowledge or support they need when clients are seriously ill or dying. This programme is about bringing our expertise to where it’s most needed.”
The next session takes place on 16th March at Fair Havens Hospice, Southend, 9.30am – 4.30pm.
