A LEIGH homeowner has lodged an appeal to keep their home extension, after being ordered to tear it down by Southend Council.
The large extension was built on the roof of the Manchester Drive house without planning permission.
Southend Council originally rejected a planning application at the start of 2023 over a roof extension being installed at the property.
Planning permission had previously been granted for alterations to the ground floor of the property and the owner claimed that the works on the roof were in association with this ground floor work.
Following a site visit in October, the planning officer was informed by the owner that works to the roof had stopped, but a further complaint, received in April 2024, stated that the works had recommenced.
After a site visit, it was confirmed that the works to construct a hip to gable roof extension and a rear dormer had commenced, and a letter was sent regarding the unauthorised works.
Despite enforcement action then being served by the council, the homeowner is putting in one last bid, and filing an appeal with the planning inspectorate, in the hope of the council’s decision being overturned.
Following this, councillors decided to issue an enforcement notice to remove the roof extension.
The Government’s planning inspector will now have the say on the final ruling.
