A LEIGH councillor has branded designs for four new homes as both “overbearing and ugly,” and out of keeping with the street scene of the area.

Speaking at a Southend Council meeting, Stephen Aylen strongly objected to a scheme that will see former shops in Woodside Parade demolished and replaced with new 1.5-storey homes.

The plans were given the green light by Southend Council’s development control committee, following proposal submitted by J Thomas of Harrison Developments to build new three and five-bedroom homes.

Coun Aylen, Independent councillor for Belfairs Ward, also said during the meeting that the homes would affect other residents through overlook and parking spaces.

He reportedly said: “The proposed development by reason of its size and scale will result in overbearing form and development and will result in loss of privacy for nearby occupiers through unmitigated overlooking.

“There is already parking stress in the surrounding area. There is no off-street parking due to the narrow road. Balconies will allow potential occupiers unrestricted views over 12 rear gardens of adjoining properties – thus affecting 60 Belfairs residents.”

Coun Aylen also refuted the veracity of information in the report to councillors, stating that it wrongly stated that the No.29 bus goes to Southend Hospital.

He also disputed the number of retail units that would be lost, claiming it would be five, not three.

Coun Kevin Buck of Prittlewell well Ward reportedly backed the plans, saying that the council would “struggle to find a reason to refuse it on planning grounds,” describing the plans as “quite nice in-keeping residential properties” that would be more beneficial than “to leave some unused retail units in place.”

The council received three objections from neighbouring properties, stating that the plans were “out of keeping with the surrounding bungalows” and that there was a lack of parking in the area to accommodate the planned homes.
