Rayleigh Horticultural Society recently held their second show of the year at the Mill Arts & Events Centre, Rayleigh.

The event drew a significant crowd from the general public, and the quality of the submissions was notably high.

Due to the recent dry spell, several plant varieties either finished flowering prematurely or failed to bloom as expected.

Consequently, there were no entries in the dahlias or chrysanthemum categories. However, the vegetable display was truly impressive.

The handicraft and photography categories received numerous accolades and compliments.

Barbara Oliver claimed the title for the best domestic entry with her homemade mincemeat jar, while Joy Rodrigues earned recognition for her outstanding poppy-themed artwork in the handicraft division.

In the vegetable competition, Geoff Blower was honoured with the prestigious ‘Rayleigh Top Tray’ award, which recognises excellence in presenting a collection of three distinct vegetable types.

Notably, Peter Noble’s entry for the ‘Heaviest Pumpkin’ category tipped the scales at an astonishing 16.9 kg.

Visitors also had the opportunity to purchase various items from the Society’s Trading Store, including bulbs, fertilizers, and gardening tools, as well as seek expert advice on gardening matters.

Details of how to join the Society at a cost of just £5 per household, per year, can be found on the society’s website: rayleighhorticulturalsociety.co.uk
