ROSES were blooming at the Leigh Horticultural Society show, held on Saturday June 17.
The roses certainly stole the show, filling a bench running the whole length of the Leigh Road Baptist Church hall.
Members of the public enjoyed judging the ‘smelliest rose’ competition, but even these delicious scents were overpowered by the glorious philadelphus blooms, which featured in the ‘flowering shrub’ category.
Julia Tetley was surprised to receive a National Vegetable Society award for her five coloured potatoes: small, but perfectly formed.
Rhubarb as long as your arm, curly red lettuce and a variety of cut herbs added colour and interest to the vegetable exhibits. Alex Gamon’s amazing photograph of flying geese deserved its first prize.
Heidi Bennetto won the children’s award for a drawing of a rose, while Nellie Woodward won the Society’s special award for Best Entry in the Children’s Section with her ‘face on a biscuit’.
The cups this year were presented by Bernard Arscott, Chair of Leigh Town Council. He congratulated the exhibitors on the quality of the displays, saying: “I can see how much work has gone in to preparing and presenting the exhibits.”
Among the winners, Lesley Sammon collected the Rose Cup for the best rose exhibit and the trophy for the most points across the whole show.
The Society will be holding an Open Garden event on Saturday July 15, 11am to 4pm, when for £5 you can visit eight gardens. Programmes are available on the day from 2, St James Gardens, Westcliff, SS0 0BX.
The next flower and vegetable show will be on Saturday September 2. Everybody’s welcome, even if you just come for a slice of homemade cake in the tearoom.
