Housing Plan Slammed – A SOUTH Essex MP has slammed local council bosses for a ‘stitch up’ regarding plans for a New Town and its effect on local housing targets.
A SOUTH Essex MP has slammed local council bosses for a ‘stitch up’ regarding plans for a New Town and its effect on local housing targets.
Rayleigh and Wickford Conservative MP, Mark Francois, has spoken out in reaction to plans for a New Town, of up to 10,000 dwellings, on the border of Rochford and Southend.
The new proposals would be in addition to the already high housing targets being imposed by the Labour Government, raising fears that the local infrastructure will be unable to cope.
Mr Francois said: “The Rochford District is already looking at a Government requirement to build up to 15,000 new dwellings, out to 2043, which would require surrendering large swathes of our precious Green Belt.
“But now, we learn that the Lib Dem and Labour Leaders of Rochford and Southend, no doubt egged on by ambitious council officers, have secretly agreed a ‘Stitch-Up’ to create a further New Town, east of Rochford on the border of the two authorities, which would load an additional 10,000 houses onto our already overstretched road network, making a total requirement of some 20,000 new dwellings for Rochford, over the next two decades.
“Our infrastructure simply cannot cope with this latest attempt to ‘ram a quart into a pint pot’ and these two council leaders need to urgently explain why they’ve agreed this – up to now in secret – and how on earth our local communities are going to be able to cope.”
