Icon Paintings Display

A CHALKWELL-based artist’s work is currently on display at The Forum in Southend.

John Paul Barrett has a show called Trials and Tribulations: Modern Interpretations of Iconography on unit February 28 at the People’s Gallery in the library.

The exhibition features paintings inspired by the religious icon painters of the Byzantine period.

Mr Barrett explained: “This collection is inspired by eastern European iconography.

“Visitors experience traditional imagery of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and Christian Saints in a new light, bringing in a world of looser, subjective emotion and feelings to the canvas.

“I hope viewers will (re)connect with spiritual aspects and value symbolised by pivotal Biblical events.”

Mr Barrett will be at the gallery on Saturdays throughout February, offering visitors the opportunity to meet and speak with him about his work.

Opening hours for the exhibition on Monday to Friday 8 am till 7 pm on Saturday 8 am till 5 pm.
