A FREE event, Infant Feeding Festival, will be taking place on Sunday August 4 in Priory Park, Southend.

The themed festival has been designed for families with young children in mind, by Parent Champions and Infant Feeding specialists, to answer any questions and offer tips, guidance and support on topics including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, expressing, and when to introduce solid foods.

ABSS (A Better Start Southend) will be joined by many other local services and organisations including One to One Breastfeeding, Bump to Breast Group, City Family Community Interest Company, FOOD Club, Trust Links, Southend Supports Breastfeeding, Cake Club and more. Surprises are in store for little ones – Magic Dave will keep little ones entertained and timetabled activities will be taking place during the afternoon.

Dr. Nia D Thomas, Director of ABSS, said: “We’re really looking forward to meeting up with parents, expectant parents, families and the littlest members of our community to celebrate and support their Infant Feeding journeys.

“The event will shine a light on the outstanding support available to families in Southend.”

Southend Supports Breastfeeding is a new scheme from A Better Start Southend. Its ambition is to normalise, encourage and welcome breastfeeding across the City of Southend. They will be providing a baby friendly feeding zone at the event, where families are welcome to feed their infant in comfort and seek support from professionals.

Aimee Coombs, Infant Feeding Specialist for A Better Start Southend, said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating World Breastfeeding Week and bringing Southend Supports Breastfeeding to our local community.

“The UK has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world and we want to change that. Breastfeeding has so many benefits for mother and baby; it protects against common childhood illnesses, supports mother and baby bonding, and protects against sudden infant death to name a few.

“We want society to realise that breastfeeding is the biological norm. Creating an inclusive and supportive culture in Southend is important for the health and wellbeing of both mother and baby. We’ll be on hand to answer any questions people have about breastfeeding, expressing, weaning and anything else related to their feeding journey.”
