A NEW coastal project for Chalkwell has seen new a permanent timber boardwalk installed.

The project, developed through SARCC (Sustainable and Resilient Coastal Cities), was funded by Southend City Council’s capital budgets, and provides improve access for all to Joscelyne’s Beach.

Coun James Courtenay, conservative councillor for Chalkwell Ward commented: “This is a fantastic investment of over a £100K into Chalkwell.

“It combines the need for nature-based solutions for the costal management and flood defences, alongside enabling pedestrian access including for disabled, elderly and parents with buggies, to be able to access the beach via the new timber boardwalk.”

This second part of the £115,000 project will see plants species installed as a new a climate resilient garden.

The plaints selected will be suited to the harsh environment of a coastal landscape, with native perennial and herbaceous plants being supplemented by ornamental grasses.

Coun Courtenay added: “So there will be native perennial and herbaceous plants being supplemented by ornamental grasses.

“Overall looking forward to this being ready for the summer, for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the new look and easier access to this extremely popular beach.”

SARCC aim to help mainstream nature-based solutions (NBS) into coastal management and policy making, whether that is as stand-alone projects or NBS-hybrids, where they are integrated into existing grey infrastructure and flood defences.
