A LEIGH resident faced a harrowing ordeal when confronted by a knife-wielding intruder during an aggravated burglary, prompting a significant police presence.

At 10:30 pm on Tuesday September 19, a convoy of Essex Police vehicles rushed to an Elm Road residence following reports of an aggravated burglary.

According to allegations, an individual forcibly entered the property, demanding money, and menacingly brandishing a knife.

Aston Line, a Labour councillor for the Westborough ward, was startled by the sight of numerous police vehicles with flashing blue lights and observed a substantial contingent of officers entering the alleyway on Elm Road, situated near Osborne’s Fishmonger and Seafood School and Fish 2 Go takeaway.

He said: “I was making my way home, following an all members meeting of Southend West Labour Party, when suddenly a chain of police cars appeared, with lights flashing, from every possible direction.

“Officers at the scene were unable to offer clarity as to the nature of the incident, but the sheer scale and speed of the response suggests a certain degree of severity.

“I thank the police for their robust response.”

Essex Police said that during the incident, one of its officers was assaulted, sustaining minor injuries.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were called to an address in Elm Road, Leigh-on-sea at around 10:30pm last night following reports of an aggravated burglary.

“The suspect entered the victim’s property, demanding money and threatening the victim with a knife.

“When attending, one of our officers was assaulted, sustaining minor injuries.

“A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault against an emergency services worker.

“He remains in custody and enquiries are ongoing.”

This incident followed an earlier disturbance in Southend. At approximately 6:15 pm, Police received a call reporting a significant disturbance at Warrior Square, involving approximately eight young men.

Subsequently, they apprehended a 15-year-old boy, who was taken into custody, on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm with intent. This arrest followed an incident in which a man suffered severe facial injuries, although they are not believed to be life-altering.

Additionally, an 18-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.
