LABOUR has won the seat of Southend East and Rochford by a wide margin, with businessman Bayo Alaba triumphing over the Tory candidate Gavin Haran by over 4,000 votes.
Mr Alaba’s were was the first results to be announced at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre, gaining 15,395 votes against the Mr Haran’s 11,368, in the first of two historic wins for Southend.
Gavin Haran took over from Sir James Duddridge earlier this year, but failed to win the seat, suffering a 30.3% decrease on 2019’s results.
Former Parachute Regiment member Mr Alaba, who is currently a councillor for the London Borough of Redbridge, commented: “My biggest thanks tonight is for every person across Southend East and Rochford who put their trust in me.
“Tonight, we made history and tomorrow our work begins.
He concluded: “Now is the time to get on with delivering.”
Leslie Lilley, who was deselected from the Reform Party days ahead of the election, came third with 7,214 votes, whilst Lib Dem candidate James Allen received 2,269 votes, trailing behind the Green’s 2,716 votes.
