DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, says he is thrilled about plans to bring improvements to the lives of children and families.

He has backed what has been described as the landmark Children’s Bill, which he says puts children and their wellbeing at the heart of government policy.

He added: “I am so pleased to say that in my first week back in Parliament, we’ve introduced legislation that will improve the household finances of families and the life chances of children across Southend West and Leigh.”

During a meeting with the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, she told him that the bill will drive rising standards in schools and make lives easier for families.

The Bill includes cost saving measures, such as limiting the number of branded items of uniform to three, plus a tie, which could save families £50 per child.

It also introduces free breakfast clubs in primary schools, a potential saving of up to £450 a year. The Children’s Wellbeing Schools Bill plans to drive up standards in schools with a new national curriculum, designed to ensure young people are ready for work.

Teachers will have to be qualified or on the training pathway and councils will be allowed to open new schools where more school places are needed.

Children’s safeguarding will be strengthened by introducing a register of children not in school with a unique number for every child, to help keep track of vulnerable children.

Mr Burton Sampson said: “These are hugely positive moves.

“This is a child-centred government and we are determined to break down the barriers to opportunity, so every child has a chance.

“These reforms will deliver lasting improvements to children and families.“
