THE LEIGH Branch of the Royal British Legion has thanked the numerous Scout sections who attended Southend’s 80th anniversary celebrations of the Victory in Europe (VE Day).

THE 80th anniversary of VE Day was marked in Southend with a Beacon Lighting Ceremony by the Cenotaph.

Crowds gathered to mark the historic moment at the war memorial on Clifftown Parade, amongst them civic dignitaries, councillors, and Scout sections from across the city.

Around 24 Scout Sections from across the city attended the ceremony, which took place on May 8th.

Matt Garfirth, Branch Standard bearer of Leigh’s Royal British Legion branch, put in a big thank you to the young Scouts who participated in the ceremony alongside the Legion.

He said: “Southend has around 35 scout groups across the city, and for the VE Day event, we were delighted to be joined by 24 of them.

“The scout groups were all an absolute credit to their organisations, and did the city extremely proud at such a momentous occasion.”

Mr Garfirth added: “We were also delighted to see that the Union Flag, and the Royal British Legion Standard, Leigh on Sea Branch, were carried so proudly and expertly by two Scout leaders, Mr Kieran Skeggs and Miss Amber Sturgeon respectfully.”
