A LEIGH GP has been given a warm send off by well-wishers and colleagues as he retires from a 40-year post at a local surgery.

Dr Houston, from Scotland, moved to the area over four decades ago to take up a position as a doctor in Leigh’s Highland’s Surgery.

Dr Houston enjoyed a leaving cake and presents with his patients and practice group at the surgery on London Road, and shared his thoughts on the importance of care in his profession.

Although this month marks his official retirement, he will be returning to the surgery to work as a locum doctor.

Jean de Tourtoulon commented: “At Dr Houston’s retirement do with the patients practice group at Highlands surgery, he stated hospitals were about patients and medical issues, doctors are about caring for people.

“He talked about moving down from Scotland to take up his first post as a GP over 40 years ago at the practice.

“He officially retires Friday although will still be working as a locum.

“He was presented with vouchers for a restaurant of his choice. We will all miss him.”
