A DERELICT former shelter in Leigh’s Old Town will be transformed after plans to transform it into a “high quality” food takeaway were approved.
The plans, lodged by Fruits of the Sea, will transform the erstwhile shelter, next to the Leigh Sailing Club, into a takeaway kiosk serving ice cream, hot and cold drinks, and seafood.
The planning document, submitted by Southend-based Skarchitects, added: “The building is located in an important part of Old Leigh as it is the first structure that pedestrians encounter when arriving from the tow path.
“It faces directly onto Leigh Beach and sits below the terrace of Leigh Sailing Club.
“It presents a very negative ‘entrance’ to the old town and is at odds with the otherwise well-kept area.”
In addition to improving the entrance to the old town, the approved kiosk will “positively influence” the Conservation Area, “tidying up and revitalising a much-disregarded gateway”.
“The proposal will make best use of this prime spot at the entrance to Old Leigh.”
The planning documents show the kiosk is designed to steer queues along the footpath to the west, rather than the south.
Coun Matt Dent, Labour councillor responsible for culture, business, and tourism, welcomed the approval, and reportedly said: “It seems like a great location for it and I wish those behind the plans the best.”
