Leigh Road Stabbing - A MAN has been arrested following a row that saw a man stabbed multiple times outside a pub in Leigh.

A MAN has been arrested following a row that saw a man stabbed multiple times outside a pub in Leigh.

Emergency services were called to Leigh Road, close to the junction with Chalkwell Park Drive, at about 10.30pm on Friday, July 21.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “We arrived and found a man aged in his 20s had sustained stab wounds to his back and side during an altercation outside the Broker pub.

“Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The man who was arrested was questioned on suspicion of causing GBH and has been released on conditional bail.”

Thomas Gloyne, owner of the Broker, said: “We got called by Leigh Pubwatch who informed us about the incident and asked us to call the police, which we did.

“Chris Huggett, from Mariners Court pub, also received the call and rushed around to try and resolve the incident.”

Leigh Lib Dem Councillor Peter Wexham a lifelong Leigh resident, expressed despair at this latest violent incident.

He cited drink and intoxication as a key factor: “Until there’s more control on these sorts of things, I believe this will continue.

“As ward councillors, we’re not allowed to be on the committee for drinking places in our own wards, so we don’t get the chance to stop these things.”

He added: “I just despair at the way things are going, not just here, but across the whole country with these stabbings.”

Coun Wexham also spoke to the concern he has about knife crime, and suggested that more education was needed in school.

He firmly believes that allowing officers to engage with children from a young age could potentially reduce the prevalence of youths carrying knives: “If they can educate these children, maybe the problems they have can be halted at school and not lead into adulthood.”

The police have appealed for witnesses to come forward regarding the incident.

A spokesperson said: “As our enquiries have continued, we now believe there were a number of people in the area at the time who may have witnessed the incident.

“We would like anyone with information, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage to come forward to speak to us.

“You can let us know by submitting a report on our website or by using our online Live Chat service available Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) between 10am-9pm.

“Visit www.essex.police.uk/digital101 to find out more about our website reporting services.

“Alternatively, you can call us on 101.

“Please cite crime reference 42/130799/23.”
