Leigh Shanty Weekend – THIS year’s Old Leigh Shanty Weekend will be the 4th Old Leigh Shanty Weekend based in the atmospheric Old Town of Leigh.
THIS year’s Old Leigh Shanty Weekend will be the 4th Old Leigh Shanty Weekend based in the atmospheric Old Town of Leigh.
Free Community Event: Old Leigh Shanty Weekend is a Free Community Event, supported by Leigh on Sea Lions Club CIO, Priority Management Services and The Hoy at Anchor Folk Club.
Venues: The entertainment takes place at venues throughout Leigh Old Town, including : Strand Wharf (The Festival Stage), The Crooked Billet, No 1 Cocklesheds, The Boatyard Restaurant, The Mayflower PH., Ye Old Smack and The Peter Boat.
Performers: As well as local folk artistes, bands and dance sides, twenty Shanty Crews from around the Country will be taking part. All the performers are giving their services free of charge.
Charity Collection: During the weekend, there will be a collection by Leigh on Sea Lions Club in aid of Southend RNLI. The Leigh Endeavour Trust and the Lions.
Friday: The weekend starts at 7pm on Friday 16th May with a Shanty Singaround in The Crooked Billet.
Saturday: On Saturday 17th May the singing will start at 12 noon and culminate in a Grand Shanty Finale at Billet Wharf around 6pm.
Sunday: On Sunday 18th May singing and dancing will start at 12 noon with a Grand Shanty Finale at Strand Wharf at 6pm.
Shanty Crews attending include, but are not limited to : The Blakeney Old Wild Rovers (Norfolk), The Lowestoft Longshoremen (Suffolk), Impressed (Kent), The Loose Cannons (Cornwall), The Brave Marauders (Buckinghamshire), The Dockyard Dogs (London), Short Drag Roger (Oxfordshire), Freddies Barnet(Milton Keynes), Mains’l Haul (Maldon), The Silver Darlings (Southend on Sea), The Hog Eye Men (London), The Motley Crew (Essex), The Hoolies (Essex), Black Deep Shanty (Harwich), Captain Morgan’s Rum Do (Southend) and The Hoy Shanty Crew (Leigh on Sea).
Parking: Parking is available in and around the Old Town and behind Leigh Railway Station. (but get there early).
Real Ale: There will be a real ale bar at Strand Wharf on Saturday & Sunday.
Tickets: No tickets are available as the Shanty Weekend is a Free Community Event!
