A LEIGH resident has been awarded for their years of voluntary work promoting the ecologic health of the estuary.

Clive Webster, 71, a volunteer with Thames21 and other organisations bidding to clean up the Thames, is a stalwart of community action, was recognised with a special cup at the society’s Volunteer Celebration awards.

Mr Webster’s neighbour Adam Morgan, has also worked closely with Thames 21.

He explained: “We have a very much hands-on attitude to conservation

“We aim to protect the natural beauty of the river, adjacent lands and buildings of historical and architectural interest and to promote nature conservation; preserve and extend amenities and to encourage the use of the river for all purposes, and support and contribute to the efforts of other organisations associated with the River Thames.”

Mr Morgan explained that Mr Webster had combined his voluntary work with a busy life travelling, long term caring, writing and working as an accountant ,before working as IT manager for Deloitte’s.

Not only has Mr Webster been a Warden of the River Thames Society, helping to improve the environment on Two Tree Island and the wider estuary shores, but he also set up a database highlighting pollution issues that the tidal Thames faces.

Mr Morgan added that Mr Webster was a shining beacon of community work, and an example to many: “Litter picking is something that makes you feel good and does good but requires an active mind and body.”
