A FORMER soldier has lived the dream by turning his comic aspirations into a reality, also supporting Jim Davidson on tour.

Pat Smith’s previous life was as an infantry soldier with The First Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment ‘The Vikings’.

He joined the military at 19 and travelled the globe, before unfortunately contracting Malaria and finding himself in intensive care.

Mr Smith – who lives in Leigh with wife Lois, his childhood sweetheart, and three-year-old son Blake – said: “I was in intensive care for a week, which looking back now, might’ve been better than the course!

“After I was discharged, I was struggling to walk and as a result was forced to drop out of my promotion course. I decided I didn’t want to go through it again so I left the Army. I’d already been thinking it was time to try something new and so I did.”

Taking up an office job and commuting from Leigh, he also started going along to open mic nights at his local club.

He said: “The local club is fantastic. I’d go every Sunday to the open mic nights and just watch. Eight months later, I finally got up on stage and I absolutely loved it.”

Since that night, Mr Smith has been taking the comedy world by storm, winning a number of competitions, including Up The Creek Laughter Craft Gong, and Funhouse Gong, as well as making the semi-finals of So You Think You’re Funny (2023)?

He was also crowned champion of Ustreme’s Laughter Class, having been mentored by Jim Davidson, Bobby Davro, Kev Orkian and Christopher Biggins, and winning the chance to support Jim on his acclaimed 2024 tour Swimming Against The Tide.

His set at Great Yarmouth’s Britannia Pier on July 26th will be streamed exclusively on Davidson’s Ustreme channel later this year, along with that of award-winning comic Gerry K.
