A FORMER furniture and curio shop in Westcliff has been bulldozed to make way for a block of flats.

The former Les and Gary’s store, near Westcliff Library in London Road, was demolished to make way for a three and five-storey development of 20 flats.

The proposed development raised many objections at the time, including the height and bulk of the new flats, and its proximity to the nearby one-storey listed Westcliff Library.

The plans were nonetheless approved by Southend Council’s planning committee in July last year.

The scheme will also provide off-street parking for 20 vehicles in an under-croft area behind the commercial unit, including two disabled spaces.

This will all be accessed from Fleetwood Avenue via an existing access.

When Les and Gary’s relocated to a smaller premises further east up the London Road, the large building lay dormant and has since then become a magnet for graffiti, leading some to describe it as an “eyesore.”

With the demolition complete, work will now begin on the flat development of a number of different sized flats including five one-bedroom, six two-bedroom, and nine three-bedroom flats.

There will also be a commercial space on the ground floor.
