Leigh On Sea News. Letters – Letter from: Coun Alan Hart, Leigh Town Councillor.

SIR, Coun Mark Flewitt (Leigh News, 8th August) continues to rail against the ‘paltry’ expenses available to Leigh Town Councillors, claiming it is only £1.63 per week.

What he ignores is that the minimum requirement of service would be attendance at Full Council meetings every two months. That could reap expenses of £14 per meeting, unless of course a Councillor has chosen to sit on multiple committees and chooses to travel ‘abroad’ on what is usually described as ‘jollies’ or fact-finding missions.

Enough of that, we know that historically no Coun has found it necessary to claim anything, whatever their personal situation financially.

Coun Flewitt’s idea of 16 Councillors working for the public is commendable, however you don’t fix that which is not broken. Leigh Town Council has a proud history of public service, but I find myself wondering where is transparency when a party group has the right, and exercises it, meets outside Council and pre-empts policy?

Incidentally, no Town Councillor may comment on the Town Clerk’s position without being barred from a subsequent hearing.

SIR, with reference to the letter from Coun Flewitt in the Leigh News today (August 8), it appears that Coun Flewitt may not have been on a bus recently because we are all still enjoying the £2 per journey bus fares introduced by the Government to help us in this current financial crisis.

I am appalled that the current administration at LTC (Leigh Town Council) believe they need allowances. All previous councillors were happy to volunteer their time and were happy to work for the good of the town without requiring any financial remuneration.Read more.
