DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP or Southend West and Leigh, is welcoming the announcement that LGBT veterans will receive compensation for historic wrongs they experienced in the Armed Forces.
Veterans and campaigners have worked for justice after the experiences of LGBT veterans who served between 1967 and 2000 during the ban on homosexuality in the Armed Forces.
Many serving personnel were dismissed, discharged, forced to resign and stripped of their ranks, during this period.
The MP said: “I am delighted at the news that LGBT veterans will receive compensation, it has taken too long.
“It cannot undo the damage of the past, but it finally recognises the hurt too many LGBT veterans endured. Veterans can now receive up to £70,000 in recognition for their loss of career and the hurt caused and they can apply to have their rank restored.”
Mr Burton-Sampson added that it was Labour who lifted the ban on gay members the armed forces in 2000: “I’ve have met with veterans supporting the campaign and I am happy this goes some way to recognise their achievements during their service and helps restore the faith of those who have served this country.
“I am pleased that this Government is listening to veterans and is delivering the financial recognition they deserve.”
