Members rose (pun intended) to the occasion and roses were definitely the order of the day. Red, yellow, orange, white and multicoloured roses adorned the benches while show visitors voted for their favourite scented rose.
Although vegetables were low on numbers, there was no shortage of pot plants, flowering shrubs and hardy perennials. The children’s, photography, arts and homecraft classes were similarly well supported.
Coun David Bowry, Chair of Leigh Town Council, attended the event and handed out cups and trophies to the prize winners.
Lesley Sammon won the cup for most points in the rose classes, most points in cut flower classes and a Royal Horticultural Society bronze medal for her trug of flowers. However, Terry Birdseye took the ‘best in show’ award for his beautiful orange and yellow rose, ‘Tequila Sunrise’, as well as the prize for the most fragrant rose. Margaret Darragh won a Special Award for her vase of three roses.
Other Special Awards went to Anna Watson for her hanging basket and Janis Field for her succulents.
New member Hilary Painter entered a show for the first time ever and won an award for her trough of succulents. In addition, to thank her for 17 years of dedicated leadership of the Society and to acknowledge this centenary year, Chairman Julia Tetley was presented with a beautiful ‘Golden Celebration’ rose for her garden.
The next event on the Society’s busy centenary calendar will be a coach outing to Hemmingford Abbots flower festival on 28th June, followed by the Leigh Open Gardens Trail on 5th and 6th July, a trip to Elton Hall house and gardens on 23rd July and a tea party on 23rd August.
