HAND luggage restrictions are changing at Southend Airport following the introduction of upgraded security screening equipment.
Passengers can now carry up to two litres of liquids in their cabin bags, replacing the previous 100ml limit introduced in June 2024. The change comes after the rollout of new C3 security technology.
The new scanners also mean travellers no longer need to remove electronic devices from their bags, and all passengers will be screened using full-body scanners.
However, liquids over two litres and aerosol cans above 500ml remain prohibited.
While the updated rules apply at Southend, passengers travelling through other UK or international airports should check local restrictions, as not all airports have adopted the changes.
A spokesperson from Southend Airport said: “No more plastic bags!
“Passengers are allowed to carry up to two litres of liquids in their cabin baggage, thanks to our CT security scanners. Aerosols larger than 500ml are not permitted in either hand or hold baggage.
“Please be aware that any liquids in your cabin baggage may be subject to additional testing. Metal containers and flasks need to be emptied before you enter the security screening area.
“But! Not to worry – you can refill after security at a nearby water fountain, or at any of our food and drink outlets.
“Remember, many airports around the world have not introduced this new technology, so you are likely to still require your one litre clear plastic bag and liquids in containers not exceeding 100ml when returning from your destination.
“The full restrictions are available to read on the gov.uk website, which apply to everyone departing from airports in the UK, no matter where they’re flying to.”
The announcement is the latest in a raft of enchantments at Southend Airport, including an expanding portfolio of flight destinations to Ibiza, Jersey, Barcelona, and Munich announced for 2026.
