Local Government Reorganisation

THE Leader of Rochford District Council has issued a statement regarding the Government’s decision to review its planned Local Government Reorganisation.
Coun Adi Malviya said: “Earlier in the summer we agreed to support, as an interested party, Essex County Council’s judicial review challenge to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government’s decision on his preferred option for the reorganisation of local government in Greater Essex.
“We have consistently opposed the Government’s proposed Local Government Reorganisation model since the elections in May 2026, when the Council formally set out its concerns about the impact the proposal would have on the Rochford district, local representation and service delivery. Therefore, I welcome the Government’s announcement that it is withdrawing the decision it made in March.
“The decision would have seen Rochford form a new unitary authority with Castle Point and Southend in April 2028. We did not believe this reflected the preferences expressed by our residents, nor did we consider it was the right outcome for the Rochford district.
“We estimate the council has spent around £100,000 on preparing for Local Government Reorganisation, and that does not include the significant staff time involved in this process, time that could have been better spent delivering services to residents and businesses.
“Whilst we await the Government’s timeline for the review to take place, we can now fully focus our resources and budget on the services and projects that matter most to Rochford District Council residents and businesses.”
