AS the Southend local elections draw near, two new candidates are stepping into the spotlight, vying to represent their respective wards: “bring fresh perspectives to local governance.”
James Morrison and Malla Reddy Gurram, both from the Labour Party, say they: “are ready to make their mark on the political landscape of West Leigh and Leigh, respectively.”
James Morrison, an Infrastructure Engineer, hybrid-worker, and community activist, is throwing his hat into the ring for the position of Labour’s first Councillor for West Leigh.
With a passion for grassroots campaigning and a commitment to building a better future for Southend, Mr Morrison aims to bridge the gap between residents and local government.
Reflecting on his journey into politics, Mr Morrison shared, “Politics is broken, but what can I do?” This question propelled him to join The Labour Party, where he swiftly became an active and dedicated doorstep campaigner. Now, he is determined to stand up for the residents of West Leigh and advocate for their needs on the council.
“I’ve listened to what people want from their elected representatives in Southend.”, said Mr Morrison. He aims to bring a political balance to the ward and collaborate with existing councillors to address issues effectively.
Living on Darenth Road, behind where Wings & Wheels used to be, Mr Morrison believes he understands the unique challenges facing his community. “Now it’s time to stand and take action for a better council – a better future. Let’s build a City we can be proud of,” Mr Morrison asserted.
Across town in Leigh, Malla Reddy Gurram, an IT Consultant with a heart for community service, is stepping forward as the Labour Party’s candidate for Leigh Ward Councillor.
Having relocated to the United Kingdom from South India two decades ago, Mr Gurram says he is deeply grateful for the opportunities he has received and is eager to give back to the society where he now resides.
Driven by a genuine passion for serving others, Mr Gurram has decided to join the Labour Party and stand as a candidate in the upcoming local elections. With Leigh being hailed as one of the best places to live, Mr Gurram sees immense potential in leveraging its unique character and addressing local concerns.
“Leigh holds a special place in my heart, and I am committed to serving its residents to the best of my abilities,” Mr Gurram stated.
Recognising the challenges facing Leigh, including issues related to the local community centre and infrastructure maintenance, Mr Gurram says he is determined to work alongside residents to find practical solutions and ensure that Leigh remains a thriving and vibrant community.
As the May 2 local elections approach, James Morrison and Malla Reddy Gurram say they are poised to bring fresh perspectives, energy, and dedication to their respective wards, embodying the spirit of civic engagement and community leadership in Southend.
