COMMUTERS were left facing disruption when a lorry crashed into a railway bridge in Hockley.

The Greater Anglia line was blocked on August 8th from around lunchtime, with cancellations and delays to services running through Hockley station.

Heavy traffic at the scene was reported on Spa Road both ways near Plumberow Avenue.

With all trains stopped for more than an hour, Network Rail staff conducted an urgent investigation of the railway bridge, ensuring its security before reopening.

Greater Anglia ticket holders were advised and able to travel on the c2c line between Southend Central and Fenchurch Street during the time of the incident.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We received reports that a low-loader lorry carrying machinery struck a bridge at Hockley at 11.41 am, causing disruption to train services.

“Our teams promptly attended the site and conducted the necessary inspections to confirm the bridge’s safety.

“We advise drivers to be fully aware of the height and size of their vehicles, including any loads, and to carefully plan their routes to avoid putting our infrastructure at risk.”

Local councillors joined Network Rail in urging drivers to be extra cautious of the height of their vehicles.

Danielle Belton, councillor responsible for Hockley and Ashingdon Ward, said: “When using the roads around the district, it is vital that drivers are responsible and avoid causing incidents where a lorry got stick under the bridge, causing delays and damage to the infrastructure,

“Everyone recognises that accidents happen, but it is extremely frustrating when things happen that could have been avoided.

“Gladly, no one was injured and Network Rail were quick to respond.”
