TWO years of supporting Ukraine – By Southend’s Mayor Councillor Stephen Habermel.

AS we recently marked two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as Mayor of Southend, I wanted to reflect on our community’s remarkable support for Ukrainians in need.

Since the Homes for Ukraine scheme started, 103 different people and families have acted as hosts and 10 have done it more than once, providing refuge and comfort to those fleeing turmoil.

Our thoughts are with all Ukrainians, both in Southend and those enduring hardships at home. We stand in solidarity, offering unwavering support to those facing challenging circumstances.

I also extend my thanks to local people who have welcomed Ukrainian guests into their homes, offering diverse forms of support, and others who have provided support in other ways.

The Council continues to help through the Ukraine Support Hub, which operates on a Tuesday at Victoria Plaza and various activities for Ukrainian guests. This would not be possible without the invaluable and collaborative support of our partner organisations and volunteers.

We have also recently received confirmation of more Government funding, which recognises the increased pressures on local authorities tackling homelessness at the moment.  It will be used it to bolster our overall homelessness response to individuals and families who have come through the Ukrainian schemes. It will specifically help us carry out our statutory functions such as advice and guidance, staffing, temporary accommodation.

The weekend also led me to think back to September when we welcomed two distinguished representatives from our sister cities in Ukraine, Mr. Ivan Fedorov, Mayor of Melitopol City Council, and Ms. Olha Pikula, Deputy of Mariupol City Council.

It was an honour and a privilege to offer our warmest greetings to them and to offer the hand of friendship, support, and solidarity.

The Ukrainian flag still proudly flies outside the Civic Centre, and along with that visit and our community response, symbolises the commitment to stand with Ukraine.

Let’s continue to show compassion and unity as we navigate these challenging times together. Thank you for your support.
