THE Mayor was joined by veterans and dignitaries in Old Leigh to mark Merchant Navy Day.
The Reg Ensign flag was hoisted on Strand Wharf on September 3.
Merchant Navy Day honours and remember the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but very hard-working, Merchant Navy seafarers.
A spokesperson for The Mayor said: “The Mayor of Southend City Council was honoured to raise the Red Ensign alongside the Chairman of Leigh Town Council at Strand Wharf to commemorate Merchant Navy Day.
“It was great to see so many people attend to join in celebrating the people behind the Red Ensign.”
A spokesperson from The Seafarer’s Charity explained: “The Fly the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day campaign was started in 2015 to address ‘sea blindness’ that appeared to afflict a huge proportion of the population, with widespread public ignorance about the UK’s ongoing dependence on merchant seafarers who are responsible for shipping over 95% of the UK’s trade.
“Merchant Navy Day is the one moment we can acknowledge the invisible service.”
