AN audio professional is bringing his skills to a new workshop designed to help people connect with Leigh’s environment through mindful listening and sound recording.
Bradley Acton has recently founded Sound On Sea, a walking workshop initiative encouraging people to step away from the digital noise of everyday life and explore the art of listening, the philosophy of sound and recording techniques.
The first session takes place from 10am to 12 noon on Sunday, July 5, and will see participants guided around Old Leigh to collect sounds.
Mr Acton, 44, said: “We’ll gather sounds and experiment with different microphones, contact mics and a hydrophone, so we can even listen underwater.”
Mr Acton has spent years working in music production, theatre and live events. He hopes to combine the benefits of mindful listening with the unique landscapes of Leigh.
“I’ve always been fascinated by sound. Despite only hearing on one side due to being born with Microtia, I recently had a prosthetic ear and a Baha hearing aid fitted.
“I’ve also taught audio, performance and recording to people aged four to 24, and I’m really interested in how sound affects the way we experience places and memories.
“Sound On Sea is a chance to share that passion with others.”
Participants can bring their own recording devices or borrow Bradley’s equipment, and he will also demonstrate how to record using a smartphone.
After the walk, the group will head to No Place Like Home at the Marina, where participants will receive a free drink and learn how to clean up their recordings, transform them into instruments for songs or simply appreciate them as they are.
Mr Acton adds: “More recently, I’ve been learning to appreciate sounds for what they are and use them to help me find focus and clarity in today’s busy world. They’re skills I really want to share.”
Further session will be held on: 9th August; 6th September; 11th October; 15th November and 13th December.
