AN Essex MP has attacked the Government’s proposed plans for  “Devolution”, during a recent debate at Westminster regarding the public petition, calling for an early General Election.

Speaking in the debate, Rayleigh and Wickford Conservative MP, Mark Francois, pointed out that of the 650 constituencies across the UK, which between them have seen over 3 million people sign the petition, six out of the “top ten”, in terms of signatories, were in Essex, with his own constituency ranked 8th across the country.

During the debate, Mr Francois attacked the devolution proposals as being very similar to the system now used in London, by Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Mr Francois said: “Then we have Labour’s plan for so-called devolution, as outlined in a White Paper before Christmas.

“In Essex, it would replace a two-tier system of local government with another two tier system of local government that would take decisions even further away from local people.

“It is a Trojan horse designed to concrete over our green belt in Essex and is based largely on Sadiq Khan’s systems, as is clear from reading the White Paper.

“I can tell the House that the last thing we want in Essex is another Sadiq Khan.”

None of the five Labour MPs from Essex were present at the debate to reply.

The six Essex constituencies in the “top ten” were Brentwood & Ongar (8,056 signatures); Maldon (8,042); Clacton (7,996); Castle Point (7,449); Braintree (7,357) and Rayleigh & Wickford (7,287).
